Canadian Community-Based Research Centres

Posted:July 17, 2013

Prepared by the Community Development Institute at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) in April 2012, the purpose of this report is to broaden the understanding of the types of community-based research centres that exist across Canada. The report is organized into two parts: (1) an inventory of community-based rural research centres, and (2) information about community-based research centres that focus much of their work in urban places.

The challenge of tenure and promotion procedures should not be permitted to unduly limit the growth of the movement for community-university engagement in Canada. A dialogue for action on this issue should be launched and sustained until this obstacle is permanently removed.*
